The Founders' Cohort is a six-week-online founder accelerator from Masai, framed as three phases: three days in Goa, six weeks of online weekend-style work, and two days in Bangalore that end with a Demo Day pitch to an investor panel. According to Masai's official page, as of 4 October 2026, it costs ₹1,50,000 + GST for a solo founder, takes no equity and no revenue share, and the cohort starts on 20 November 2026. This guide tells you who it suits, what the Bangalore "Gate" really demands, and how to judge any accelerator before paying for it.

Disclosure: I'm Younus Fardeen, and I've worked on Masai School's organic social growth (Instagram from 26K to 117K, LinkedIn from 50K to 200K). I'm not a neutral third party here. I've taken every fact below from Masai's own pages, linked so you can check them, and I make no promise about funding, placement or outcomes.

Key Takeaways

  • The Founders' Cohort is a paid programme (₹1,50,000 + GST solo; ₹1,25,000 + GST per founder for a pair), with a ₹999 application fee and a ₹5,000 registration fee, per Masai's page.
  • Masai states "0% equity. 0% revenue share." You pay a fee instead of giving up ownership.
  • Not everyone reaches Bangalore: teams must clear stage-specific benchmarks (the "Gate"), such as a live MVP, 1,000 users and 50 paying customers for consumer startups.
  • Investors named on the page (India Quotient, Capria, Prana) are expected in the room, but Masai itself says a pitch is not an offer.
  • It suits founders who already have a problem and early traction, or want co-founder matching. It is a poor fit if you need a cheap, flexible course on startup basics.
  • Judge it on the Gate, the fee-to-value maths, the refund policy and what you'd do with the same money elsewhere.

What is Leap by Masai?

Leap by Masai is the umbrella name for Masai's residency-style cohorts: a Founders' Cohort, a Forward Deployed Engineer cohort and an AI Residency, all listed on the Masai School homepage. The Founders' Cohort is the one aimed at people building companies rather than careers. For the overview of all three, see my explainer on the Leap cohorts; this post stays on the founders track.

How the Founders' Cohort is structured

Masai's Founders' Cohort page describes three phases:

  1. Phase 1, Goa (3 days): "Find the problem. Build your team." Investor masterclasses, problem-discovery sessions and co-founder matching with roughly 100 founders.
  2. Phase 2, online (6 weeks): weekly focus areas move from shipping an MVP through user validation, distribution, pricing, data analysis and investor readiness.
  3. Phase 3, Bangalore (2 days): pitch preparation and a Demo Day in front of investor panels.

The format is weekend-focused. Masai says founders can take part without affecting their workdays, and that you don't have to quit a job to apply. Learning happens through practitioner masterclasses, working labs, founder masterclasses, mentor pods of 10-15 founders at similar stages, and one-to-one reviews.

What I'd check in the format

  • Pod fit. Pods are only useful if the other 10-15 founders are at your stage. Ask which stage-bands exist this cohort.
  • Time cost. "Weekend-focused" still means six weeks of weekends plus building time. If you ship MVPs on nights and weekends already, you're trading building time for programme time.
  • Residential logistics. Masai says accommodation (twin or triple sharing) and meals are included in both residential phases. Travel is not.

The Gate: the part most people skim past

The most important section of the page is "The Gate". To attend the Bangalore phase, teams must meet stage-specific benchmarks, per Masai:

Team typeBenchmark to reach Bangalore (per Masai's page)
Consumer startupLive MVP, 1,000 users, 50 paying customers, validated unit economics
B2B startupLive MVP, 5 companies using the product, 1 paid pilot, validated unit economics
Existing businessCustom benchmarks set with the team in week one

I read this as the programme's honest filter. It means the six online weeks are meant to produce real traction, not slides. It also means you could pay the full fee and not qualify for the final phase if your numbers fall short. That's not a criticism, it's how a demo day with serious investors has to work, but you should price that risk in before enrolling. Ask the admissions team what happens to your fee and your Bangalore seat if you miss the Gate; the refund policy is the document to read first.

Fees, refunds and what's included

All figures below are from the official page as of 4 October 2026. Fees change, so confirm on the page before paying.

ItemAmount (per Masai's page)
Application fee₹999, non-refundable
Registration fee (if selected)₹5,000
Solo founder₹1,50,000 + GST
Founding pair₹1,25,000 + GST per founder (₹2,50,000 total)
IncludedShared accommodation and meals in Goa and Bangalore, templates, pitch coaching, access to investor network
Not includedTravel, software and API costs, incorporation and legal costs, laptops

On refunds, the Leap refund policy states that registration and seat-booking fees are permanently non-refundable. For instalment plans, a refund request within 3 calendar days of the first instalment (or 7 days for the second) returns 100% of that instalment only, and for a single payment, a full refund minus registration and booking fees is available within 7 days. Requests must be emailed to the address in the policy within the window. I'm summarising; read the original before paying.

Who it is for

Masai's page lists four founder types: people who want to start but lack direction on what to build, people with an idea who need validation, people who can build but need business-development help, and solo founders who need co-founders. There's no coding requirement, no age limit and no need to leave your job, though a fitness certificate is required.

My own filter is narrower, since the Gate is demanding:

  • Good fit: you have a live MVP or can ship one in a few weeks, you can reach users, and the thing you lack is distribution, pricing discipline, investor readiness or a co-founder.
  • Questionable fit: you're pre-idea. The Goa phase is meant to help you find a problem, but the Gate then expects traction within weeks. Be honest about whether six weeks is enough for you.
  • Better elsewhere: you want to learn startup fundamentals cheaply, or you're not ready to put ₹1.5 lakh + GST behind one venture. Free resources such as the government's Startup India scheme information cost nothing to read and help you understand recognition and benefits before you spend anything.

The people and the investors

The page names Ankush Sachdeva (ShareChat), Amit Agarwal (NoBroker) and Prateek Shukla (Masai) as founder-instructors, and cites funding totals raised by their companies. Those are Masai's claims; I haven't independently verified the amounts, so treat them as attributed.

It names India Quotient, Capria Ventures and Prana Ventures partners as expected investors, and describes the final pitch as ninety seconds in front of the room. For context on one of them, Capria's own site is where to read what the fund actually does and its stage focus. Masai's page is explicit that the programme "puts you in a room" and makes you ready, but that "a pitch is not an offer": investment decisions rest with the funds. Don't enrol expecting a term sheet.

A five-question test for judging any founder accelerator

I use this checklist for any paid accelerator, including this one:

  1. Is the price for equity, cash or both? Here it's cash only, which is simpler, but you carry the cost whether or not you raise.
  2. What is the filter? The Gate is explicit. A programme with no stated bar can't promise investors a quality room.
  3. What do alumni say with names attached? I haven't found verified alumni outcome data for this new cohort, so I can't tell you. Ask for names you can call.
  4. What's the opportunity cost? Six weeks of weekends plus travel versus spending the same ₹1.5 lakh + GST on user acquisition or a contractor.
  5. Can you leave? Read the refund windows. They're short (3 to 7 days).

How it compares with Masai's other Leap cohorts

The Founders' Cohort sits beside two others on Masai's site: the Forward Deployed Engineer cohort (₹1,75,000 + GST; Vietnam residency, 10 weeks online, Bangalore hackathon) and the AI Residency (₹1,75,000 + GST; Sri Lanka residency, 6 weeks online, Bangalore hackathon). Those two are skills-and-portfolio programmes; the Founders' Cohort is the only one built around raising money and building a company.

What I'd do before applying

  • Read the full page and the refund policy, then write down your Gate numbers today. If you're far from them, be honest about whether six weeks closes the gap.
  • Talk to the team at the counselling step with specific questions: cohort size, pod composition, Gate pass rate in earlier cohorts, and what support exists if you miss it.
  • Ask for two or three founders from earlier cohorts to speak with.
  • Compare against alternatives that cost less, including free ones.

If you want to understand how Masai talks about itself in public, my write-up of the Masai School social growth case study explains the organic work I did, and who I am explains my background and why you should discount my opinion accordingly.

FAQ

How much does the Leap Founders' Cohort cost?

According to Masai's page as of 4 October 2026, ₹1,50,000 + GST for a solo founder, or ₹1,25,000 + GST per founder for a founding pair. There's also a ₹999 non-refundable application fee and a ₹5,000 registration fee if selected. Confirm on the official page.

Does Masai take equity?

No, the page states "0% equity. 0% revenue share." You pay a programme fee instead. Any investor who funds you afterwards would have their own terms.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The page says there's no coding requirement and that AI tools and co-founder matching are available. But the Gate expects a live MVP, so someone on your team must be able to ship one.

What is the Gate?

It's the set of stage-specific benchmarks a team must meet to attend the Bangalore phase. For consumer startups it's a live MVP, 1,000 users, 50 paying customers and validated unit economics; for B2B, a live MVP, 5 companies using it and 1 paid pilot.

Is funding guaranteed?

No. Masai's own page says a pitch is not an offer and that investment decisions rest solely with the fund partners.

Can I do it while working a job?

Masai says the programme is weekend-focused and designed so founders can take part without affecting their workdays. The Goa and Bangalore phases are in person, so you'd need leave for those.

When does it start?

The page lists a start of 20 November 2026. Dates can change, so confirm when you apply.

Can I apply with a co-founder?

Yes. Masai prices a founding pair at ₹1,25,000 + GST each, and says solo founders can use co-founder matching in Goa.

What happens if I want a refund?

Registration and seat-booking fees are non-refundable. Instalment refunds are available only within short windows (3 or 7 days) per the refund policy, so read it before paying.

Is this better than an IIT or IIM course?

They're different products. Those are credentialed learning programmes; this is a company-building accelerator. Pick based on whether you need a credential or traction.
