Leap by Masai is a set of three short, cohort-based programmes from Masai School: a Founders' Cohort for people building a startup, a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) cohort for engineers who already code, and an AI Residency for people who can prompt AI tools but cannot yet ship a product. Each runs in three phases, a few days on-site, six to ten weeks online with weekly shipping, and a final Bangalore stage for those who clear a published bar. Details below are from Masai's own Leap pages as of 4 October 2026 and can change, so confirm on the official page before applying.
Disclosure: I'm Younus Fardeen. I have worked on Masai School's organic social growth (Instagram 26K to 117K, LinkedIn 50K to 200K). This is not a neutral review. I did not run, attend or evaluate any Leap cohort, I have no outcome data for them, and nothing here is a promise of funding, jobs or salary.
Key Takeaways
- Three tracks: Founders' Cohort (start 20 November 2026), FDE cohort (start 6 December 2026) and AI Residency (start 6 January 2027), per Masai's Leap page.
- Shared structure: an on-site phase of three to five days, an online phase of six to ten weeks with weekly shipping requirements, and a Bangalore finale for qualifying participants.
- Application fee is ₹999; the programme fees listed on the cohort pages are ₹1,50,000 + GST for solo founders, and ₹1,75,000 + GST for FDE and AI Residency.
- Each programme has a gate: published benchmarks, minimum scores or attendance, before the Bangalore phase.
- Masai says it takes no equity in the Founders' Cohort, and states that a pitch "is not an offer", meaning funding is not guaranteed.
- I could not find outcome statistics for these cohorts on the pages I read. Ask for them in writing.
What Leap is
Masai's Leap page presents Leap as three programmes built around one model: go on-site with your cohort, build online while shipping weekly, then present in Bangalore if you have cleared the bar. The page says each programme publishes a bar on Day 1, though it does not define the criteria in general terms; the cohort pages do, as described below.
This is different from Masai's longer courses with IITs, IIMs and BITS. On Masai's homepage, Leap sits beside programmes like AI and Machine Learning with IIT Patna's incubator and Product Management with IIM Trichy. Leap is shorter, more intensive and aimed at building something. It is also unrelated to the LEAP tech conference in Saudi Arabia; if you searched for Leap and landed on that, you are looking at a different thing.
The three-phase model
- On-site phase (three to five days). Cohort bonding and commitment. Location depends on the track: Goa for the Founders' Cohort, Vietnam for the FDE cohort, Sri Lanka for the AI Residency.
- Online phase (six to ten weeks). Weekly shipping requirements, mentoring and sessions.
- Bangalore phase. Pitch rehearsal or a company-problem hackathon for those who clear the published bar.
Accommodation and meals are listed as included during the on-site and Bangalore phases on the pages I read; travel, visas and equipment are not, so check each track's inclusions.
Cohort 1: Founders' Cohort
Per the Founders' Cohort page:
- For: founders at idea or MVP stage. No coding knowledge required; no age limit (minors and those over 40 are asked to coordinate); can participate while employed; a laptop is needed.
- Structure: 3 days in Goa (problem discovery, co-founder matching, about 100 founders), a 6-week online phase (ship, validate with users, distribution, monetisation, pitch preparation), then 2 days in Bangalore with a 90-second investor pitch for qualifying teams.
- Gate: consumer startups need 1,000 users, 50 paying customers and a live MVP; B2B startups need 5 companies using the product, 1 paid pilot and a live MVP; existing businesses get custom benchmarks.
- Price: ₹1,50,000 + GST for a solo founder, ₹1,25,000 + GST per person for a founding pair, plus a ₹999 non-refundable application fee. No equity or revenue share taken, per the page.
- Start: 20 November 2026.
- Investor expectations: the page names India Quotient, Capria Ventures and Prana Ventures among expected pitch-day attendees but states that a pitch is not an offer.
The Founders' Cohort is the only one with published user and revenue benchmarks, which makes it the easiest to judge in advance.
Cohort 2: Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)
Per the FDE page:
- For: engineers with at least 1 year of technical experience in software, data or programming.
- Structure: 5 days in Vietnam from 6 December 2026, a 10-week online phase (data pipelines, APIs, cloud, containers, LLMs, RAG, agents, security), then 3 days in Bangalore for a 36-hour hackathon on a real company problem.
- Gate: at least 45% overall score and at least 65% attendance across live and recorded sessions.
- Price: ₹1,75,000 + GST; ₹999 application fee and a ₹5,000 seat reservation (non-refundable, applied to the total).
- Not included: travel, visas, cloud credits, personal equipment.
Note the naming differences across Masai's own pages: the homepage lists a 10-week online component, while the FDE page describes the programme as 12 weeks in total (5 days plus 10 weeks online plus the Bangalore phase). They are consistent once you add the phases; just count them before you plan leave.
Cohort 3: AI Residency
Per the AI Residency page:
- For: people who "can prompt but can't ship yet", who want to build without depending on a developer.
- Structure: 5 days in Sri Lanka, a 6-week online phase with weekend sessions (software fundamentals, LLMs, product development, agents, RAG, deployment), then 3 days in Bangalore to tackle a real company problem. The page describes the total as 8 weeks.
- Outcome described: one production-grade AI product deployed live, with your own data, an agent that acts and a security check before it ships.
- Price: ₹1,75,000 + GST, with accommodation and meals included on-site and travel, visas, model credits, hosting and laptop excluded.
- Admissions: ₹999 application fee, rolling review, a counselling conversation, a ₹5,000 seat reservation, then the balance.
- Start: 6 January 2027.

Admissions, step by step
The Leap page says the application fee is ₹999 (adjusted against the full programme fee upon selection), the decision comes within 3 days of applying, and there is a counselling session before seat confirmation. The FDE and AI Residency pages add a ₹5,000 non-refundable seat reservation. Always ask what happens to fees if you do not clear the bar to reach Bangalore, because the pages I read did not state a refund policy.
Who the mentors are
The Leap page says programmes are mentored by founders (including ShareChat and NoBroker founders) and senior engineers from Google, Microsoft and PayPal. The Founders' page lists mentors as ShareChat ($1.7B+ raised) and NoBroker ($366M+) founders. Those are Masai's claims; ask for the names of the mentors for your cohort and how many hours you get with them.
How to judge any short, paid cohort
- Outcome definition. Is the outcome a deployed product, revenue or a certificate? Leap's pages name concrete gates, which is a good sign.
- Gate transparency. Know the bar before paying. Ask what happens if you miss it.
- Time cost. Count on-site days, weekly hours and the Bangalore days against your job.
- Alumni evidence. Ask for past cohort outcomes with names you can contact. I found none on the pages I read.
- Total cost. Add travel, visas, equipment, cloud credits and GST.
- Refunds. Ask in writing.
Where Leap sits among Masai's offerings
Masai's longer courses, such as the IIT Jodhpur BS in Management and Technology (delivery partner) and its certificate programmes with IITs and IIMs, are credential-oriented. Leap is outcome-oriented and short. Masai has described itself as a pay-after-placement education company, per a June 2025 press release carried by Business Standard; the Leap pages I read list upfront fees and do not describe a pay-after-placement option for Leap, so do not assume one.
FAQ
What is Leap by Masai in one sentence?
Leap is a set of three cohort programmes from Masai School (Founders' Cohort, FDE cohort and AI Residency) that combine a short on-site phase, a weekly-shipping online phase and a Bangalore finale for those who clear a published bar.
How much does Leap cost?
Per the cohort pages: ₹1,50,000 + GST for a solo founder in the Founders' Cohort (₹1,25,000 + GST each for a pair), and ₹1,75,000 + GST for the FDE cohort and AI Residency. Application fee is ₹999. Check the official pages for current prices.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for the Founders' Cohort. The FDE cohort requires at least 1 year of technical experience. The AI Residency is built for people who can prompt but cannot yet ship, so it teaches fundamentals.
Does Leap guarantee funding or a job?
No. The Founders' page says a pitch is not an offer. I found no job guarantee on the FDE or AI Residency pages.
Does Masai take equity?
For the Founders' Cohort, the page says Masai takes no equity or revenue share. Read the enrolment terms for anything beyond that.
What if I do not clear the Bangalore bar?
The pages describe the Bangalore phase as for qualifying participants. I did not find a stated refund or alternative; ask before paying.
Where are the on-site phases?
Goa (Founders), Vietnam (FDE) and Sri Lanka (AI Residency), followed by Bangalore for qualifying participants. Dates and locations can change.
Are the cohort sizes published?
The Founders' page mentions about 100 founders in Goa and mentor groups of 10 to 15. I found no seat counts for the other cohorts.
