People still search. They also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot to do the searching for them.

That changes where a brand gets found. It does not make SEO obsolete. The job underneath is the same one it always was: publish something useful, make it technically reachable, be clear about what it is, and give a system enough evidence to trust it.

AEO is how I think about that problem. It breaks into six areas.

The six pillars

Entity. Answer. Evidence. Structure. Authority. Measurement.

01

Entity

Make it obvious who the page is about.

An engine that cannot work out which company you are will not risk naming you. Define the brand, the people, the product and the relationships between them, and then use the same names and the same facts everywhere, on your site and on the profiles you do not control.

  • One canonical spelling of the brand, the product and the people
  • An About page that states the entity plainly rather than poetically
  • The same founding facts on your site, your profiles and your press
  • Person and Organization data that agrees with itself sitewide

02

Answer

Give the clearest answer first.

Build the important pages around real questions, and put the direct answer next to the heading that asks it. Context, caveats and nuance come after. A page that spends four paragraphs arriving at its point has hidden the only sentence worth quoting.

  • One self-contained answer per question, phrased to survive being lifted out
  • Headings that ask the question a reader would actually type
  • The answer above the explanation, not as its conclusion
  • One page per question, rather than one page per keyword variation

03

Evidence

Make the claims that matter supportable.

An assistant inherits the credibility of what it cites, which makes an unsupported claim a liability rather than a neutral. Use first-party data, dated examples, named authors and sources a reader can check. Authority is not something you can assert your way into.

  • First-party numbers in preference to someone else's rounded statistic
  • Named authors on anything making a judgement
  • Dates on claims that will age
  • A source for every number you did not measure yourself

04

Structure

Make the information easy to retrieve.

Descriptive headings, short sections, internal links that say where they go, clean URLs and structured data that agrees with the visible page. Schema is confirmation, not persuasion: markup describing something the page does not say is the fastest way to be distrusted.

  • Heading hierarchy that reads as an outline on its own
  • Internal links with descriptive text rather than read more
  • Structured data only where it matches what the page actually says
  • Critical information as text, never only inside an image

05

Authority

Build corroboration beyond your own site.

Everything above happens on property you control, which is exactly why none of it is sufficient. Relevant mentions, references and citations from credible places are what corroborate the entity. This is the slow pillar, and it quietly decides how much the other five are worth.

  • Mentions from places that already have topical credibility
  • Profiles that are consistent with the entity you defined in pillar one
  • Earned references rather than placed ones
  • Patience, because this is the pillar with no shortcut in it

06

Measurement

Measure discovery, not fantasy rankings.

Track search performance and AI citation signals separately, because they are different things and mixing them produces a number that cannot be acted on. Bing's AI Performance report names cited pages and grounding-query themes, and says plainly that citation activity is not a ranking, authority, click or engagement metric.

  • Organic: impressions, clicks, indexed pages, relevant positions
  • AI: cited URLs, citation volume and grounding themes where reported
  • Coverage: how many important questions have a real answer
  • Business: qualified enquiries and assisted conversions

GEOGenerative-engine visibility, broadly definedA related industry term. Useful shorthand, not a separate magic discipline with its own levers.

Including claims I could imply myself. A framework that only lists what to do reads as a pitch, and this is the section that makes the rest of the page worth believing.

  • A schema that makes ChatGPT cite you

There is no markup that compels a citation. Structured data confirms what a page says; it does not argue for it.

  • Guaranteed ChatGPT or Perplexity citations

Nobody controls the selection layer. The honest version is improving the odds and measuring the movement.

  • An AEO score that determines visibility

Useful for direction, not precision. Sampling differs by tool and answers vary by session and region.

  • llms.txt as a Google requirement

Google has said publicly that it does not use it. Publish it if you like; it costs nothing and it is not a lever.

  • FAQ markup earning a rich result

Google removed the documentation for FAQ rich results. Write FAQs because readers need them.

  • More words improving AI visibility

Volume without differentiation is what the scaled content abuse policy exists to catch.

  • More mentions meaning more authority

Relevance and credibility do the work. A mention from nowhere relevant counts for roughly nothing.

  • Citations being equivalent to traffic

A citation is evidence of reference. Bing says outright it is not a click or engagement metric.

  • Page is indexable and has a canonical URL
  • Descriptive title and one clear H1
  • Clean heading hierarchy
  • Descriptive internal link text
  • Included in the XML sitemap
  • lastmod that moves only on material change
  • Structured data that matches the visible content
  • Strong author identity and a real About page
  • Consistent brand and entity naming
  • No accidental robots.txt block on search or AI crawlers
  • Fast, usable page experience
  • Critical information available as text, not only as an image

  • Answer the question directlyOpen with a 2,000-word preamble
  • Use first-party evidenceSay industry-leading
  • Build clear entitiesStuff entity names into the copy
  • Write descriptive headingsUse headings as keyword slots
  • Cite credible sourcesAdd links to look authoritative

  • What is AEO?

Structuring a brand's information so search engines and AI systems can discover it, understand what it is about, and reference it accurately. In practice it is mostly recognisable SEO work done with a different output in mind: being quoted rather than being clicked.

  • Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Google's guidance says foundational SEO stays relevant because its generative features rely on Search systems to retrieve pages, and that there are no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility. Anyone selling AEO as a separate discipline is usually selling a second retainer for overlapping work.

  • Does schema make ChatGPT cite a page?

No. Structured data helps a machine confirm what a page is about, which is worth having. It does not compel a citation, and markup that describes something the page does not actually say is worse than none.

  • How do you measure AI visibility?

Separately from search, and carefully. Bing's AI Performance report names cited URLs and grounding-query themes, which is the closest thing to first-party data anyone currently publishes. Treat it as evidence of reference. Bing itself says it is not a ranking, authority, click or engagement metric.

  • Can you guarantee citations?

No, and it is worth leaving anyone who says otherwise. The selection layer is not something a practitioner controls. What is controllable is whether the page is retrievable, clear, evidenced and worth quoting.

  • How often should this work be updated?

Review the technical guidance quarterly and whenever a major platform changes its documentation. The tactics in this field age quickly, and the correct response is removing the ones that stopped being true rather than stacking new ones on top.
