Engine guide: Grok

How to get cited by Grok

Grok has a source no other assistant has in the same way: live posts on X. For brands, that makes a public account and the conversation about it part of the retrieval layer.

The short answer

Grok, from xAI, answers with live search across the web and posts on X, and it shows both as sources. Getting cited means two jobs: a crawlable website with clear, dated facts, and an X presence where your claims, launches and answers appear in posts people engage with. xAI publishes little about crawlers, so web access rests on standard indexability.

What ranked on 26 September 2026: Few pages target this query, and most are short tool-vendor posts. xAI's own documentation describes web and X search as tools the model can call, but does not publish a crawler user agent or publisher guidance comparable to OpenAI's or Anthropic's.

What is specific to Grok

The X integration is the defining trait. Posts are a first-class source, often favoured for breaking news and opinion questions.

  • Grok can search X posts directly, so your own posts and replies can be cited in the answer
  • Posts from accounts with engagement and relevant replies are more likely to surface than silent accounts, based on how X search itself ranks
  • For news and trending topics, X posts can outweigh web pages because they appear minutes after an event
  • Web results are cited alongside, but xAI has not documented a dedicated crawler name to allow or block
  • Grok's tone and answer length vary by mode, and some modes search less than others

Things that sound right and are not

  • ClaimWe do not use X, so Grok does not matter.

Others post about you there regardless. If your account is empty, their posts are the only X source Grok can find.

  • ClaimPosting more is the fix.

Volume without answers adds little. A post that states a fact plainly, such as a price change or a launch date, gives Grok something to cite. Threads of slogans do not.

  • ClaimWe can block Grok with robots.txt.

Without a documented user agent that is guesswork. You can block unidentified bots generally, but you cannot target Grok with confidence from public documentation.

Where to start

  1. 01Ask Grok your ten category questions and note which sources are X posts and which are web pages.
  2. 02Make sure your X profile states what you do, where and for whom, in plain words.
  3. 03Post key facts, including launches, pricing changes and answers to common questions, as standalone posts rather than image-only posts.
  4. 04Reply to relevant questions in your category on X with direct answers.
  5. 05Keep the website version of each fact current, so a web source backs up what the posts say.

Questions

Does Grok use Bing or Google?
xAI has not published its web search provider in detail. Standard indexability across major search engines is the safest assumption.
Do X Premium accounts get cited more?
There is no public evidence that subscription status affects Grok citations. Premium accounts do get reply prioritisation on X, which may affect visibility indirectly.
Is Grok worth prioritising?
For brands whose buyers are active on X, yes. For most local or B2B businesses, the engines covering Google and Bing indexes come first.
