AEO vs SEO

AEO vs SEO: what actually differs, and what does not

Most of the work is the same work. The differences are real but narrow, and knowing which is which decides whether you need a new budget line or a change of emphasis in the one you have.

The short answer

SEO earns a ranking that a person clicks. AEO earns a sentence that a machine repeats. The craft underneath is largely shared: clear pages, credible sources, clean technical access. What differs is the unit of success, the measurement, and how much of the outcome you control.

What ranked on 18 September 2026: Searching this phrase returns mostly tool vendors and agency explainers. Google's own guidance on optimising for AI features says there is no separate markup or hidden lever for AI surfaces, which is the least commercial answer available and the one worth starting from.

The part that is identical

An answer engine does not crawl a private index. It reads pages, or it reads a search index built from pages, and both routes run through work that has been called SEO for twenty years.

  • A page a crawler can fetch, render and parse without executing something it will not execute
  • A title and a first paragraph that state what the page answers, in the words a person would use
  • Internal links that show which page is the authority on a subject
  • Facts that agree across your own site, because a model reconciling two versions of your pricing will usually pick neither

The four things that genuinely differ

These are the differences worth budgeting for. Everything else marketed as an AEO speciality is SEO with a new label.

  • The unit. SEO optimises a page for a position. AEO optimises a passage for extraction, so a self-contained paragraph beats a well-structured page whose meaning depends on the two sections above it.
  • Attribution. A ranking either exists or does not. A citation can happen in one model, in one phrasing of a question, and not in the next, so the same page can be both cited and invisible on the same day.
  • Off-site weight. Answer engines lean on sources they already trust, which pushes effort towards being described accurately on Wikipedia, forums, review sites and directories rather than on your own pages.
  • Volatility. A ranking moves over weeks. A model update moves everything at once, and nothing you did caused it.

Measurement is the honest problem

SEO has impressions, clicks and positions, all reported by the engine itself. AEO has nothing equivalent. There is no console that tells you how often ChatGPT named you last week. What exists is sampling: run a fixed set of questions across the engines on a schedule, record whether you appear and how you are described, and treat the result as a survey rather than a count.

  • Decide the question set before you start, and keep it fixed, or you will be measuring your own editing
  • Record the description, not just the mention, because being cited as the wrong kind of company is a different problem
  • Expect noise between runs on the same day, and do not rewrite a page over one bad sample

What to do with this

  1. 01If your technical foundations are weak, spend there first. An answer engine cannot quote a page it cannot fetch, and no amount of AEO packaging fixes that.
  2. 02If you already rank and still do not appear in AI answers, the problem is usually structure and third-party description, not volume. Rewriting for extractability is cheaper than another content programme.
  3. 03Do not create a separate AEO budget before you can measure a baseline. Sample your question set for a month first, then decide what the work is worth.

Questions

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
Largely, yes, and anyone selling it as a separate discipline should be asked which four things they do differently. The differences that survive scrutiny are extractability, third-party description, sampling-based measurement and tolerance for volatility. That is a change of emphasis inside organic work, not a separate function.
Can I do AEO without doing SEO?
Not in practice. Answer engines either read your pages directly or read a search index built from them, so the technical and content work that makes a page findable is the same work that makes it quotable.
Does structured data make a page appear in AI answers?
It helps a machine agree with what your page already says, and it is worth having. It is not a switch that produces citations, and Google's published guidance on AI features does not describe any AI-specific markup.
