Laptop displaying lines of code on screen, illustrating IIT Jodhpur vs IIT Madras Management Degree: Which Fits You

IIT Jodhpur's BS in Management and Technology is a fully online four-year degree with a fixed fee of ₹5,60,000 and an entrance test, while IIT Madras's BS in Management and Data Science is a hybrid degree with mandatory in-person exams, a qualifier route and fees that depend on the courses you register for each term. Neither is better in the abstract. Which one fits depends on how you handle exams, how flexible you need the pace to be, and how much you value a fixed price versus a pay-as-you-go structure. Facts below are as of 4 October 2026 and come from each institute's official pages.

Disclosure: I'm Younus Fardeen. I have worked on Masai School's organic social growth (Instagram 26K to 117K, LinkedIn 50K to 200K), and Masai supports delivery of the IIT Jodhpur programme. I am not a neutral party, so I have attributed every cell in the table to a source and marked what I could not verify as "check official page". I am not claiming either degree guarantees a job.

Key Takeaways

  • IIT Jodhpur: online, fixed ₹5,60,000 over 4 years, entrance test (60 MCQs), 141 credits, optional campus immersion.
  • IIT Madras: hybrid, in-person quizzes and exams in designated cities, qualifier route after a four-week course, fee proportional to courses registered each term.
  • Both accept Class 12 pass-outs without needing JEE (IIT Madras also has a JEE-based entry route).
  • Pace differs: IIT Madras lets you take fewer courses per term and finish in 4 to 8 years; IIT Jodhpur has a structured 8-semester plan.
  • IIT Madras's total cost is not published as one figure on the pages I read; check the official page rather than relying on a reported "about ₹4 lakh".
  • Choose on format and exam tolerance first, brand second.

The two programmes in one paragraph each

IIT Jodhpur's BS in Management and Technology is a 141-credit, 47-course, 8-semester online degree. Learning is through recorded lectures and live weekend faculty sessions; campus immersion is optional. Masai (Nolan Edutech) supports delivery.

IIT Madras's BS in Management and Data Science is a 142-credit degree built on three levels (Foundation 32, Diploma 60, Degree 50 credits), delivered through online content, tutorials and assignments with in-person quizzes and exams. It was announced through a PIB press release with a launch date of 21 February 2026.

Eligibility and entry: the real differences

IIT Jodhpur

The entry requirement is the percentage. Sixty percent aggregate in Class 12 (50% for reserved categories) from any stream, then the entrance test. A working professional with a 2015 marksheet at 62% qualifies on paper; one at 58% does not.

IIT Madras

The IIT Madras route is the opposite: the qualifier is about demonstrated ability. You study four weeks of foundational content (the program page names Math, Statistics, Critical Thinking and English), complete weekly assignments, clear score thresholds to receive a hall ticket and then take the qualifier exam. The FAQ says results stay valid for three terms. A degree with no minimum percentage and a proof-of-effort gate suits people whose school marks were weak but whose current discipline is strong.

Format and exams

IIT Madras is explicit that quizzes and end-term exams are in person at designated cities, with no home-based exams within India, and that the dates are fixed for all learners. If you live in a city without a centre or have a job with rigid schedules, plan travel. Per the FAQ, you must also attend at least one of two mandatory in-person quizzes to write end-term exams.

IIT Jodhpur's page describes optional campus immersion and live weekend sessions. It does not, on the page I read, spell out exam location rules, so ask admissions directly. Do not assume remote exams without written confirmation.

Fees: how to think about cost

IIT Jodhpur's cost is easy to model: ₹5,60,000 plus ₹999 for the test, ₹5,000 seat booking (non-refundable), optional immersion of about ₹6,000 per session and ₹4,000 convocation.

IIT Madras charges in proportion to courses registered each term, payable online (credit card, netbanking, wallet or UPI; debit cards not accepted, per the FAQ). A Careers360 news report put it at about ₹4 lakh, based on the fee structure of IIT Madras's data science programme. That is a secondary source's estimate, not an official total, so check official page. Fee waivers: the FAQ says SC, ST and PwD candidates can get waivers at the application stage and income-based waivers are available after the qualifier. IIT Madras's sister BS Data Science and Applications page mentions waivers for learners under a ₹5 LPA family income; confirm whether the same applies to this programme.

The structural difference matters more than the headline: Madras costs rise or fall with your pace, whereas Jodhpur's is annual instalments. Faster is not cheaper at Madras if you fail courses, and slower is not free at Jodhpur if you defer.

Curriculum emphasis

IIT Madras brands the degree as management plus data science, with a Diploma in Data Analytics for Business as an exit and a Careers360-listed career set including data scientist and business analyst. IIT Jodhpur's programme is management plus technology, with curriculum summaries listing accounting, economics and marketing early and machine learning, AI applications, operations, HR and fintech later. If you want more statistics and analytics depth, the Madras framing leans that way; if you want a general management spine with technology literacy, Jodhpur's year-by-year summary leans that way. Read both syllabi in full, since course lists change.

Who should choose which

Choose IIT Jodhpur if:

  • You want a fixed, predictable fee and structured semesters.
  • You prefer entrance-test admission over a multi-week qualifier.
  • You want multiple exit points with credits stated up front (36, 72, 108, 141).
  • You are comfortable with live weekend sessions.

Choose IIT Madras if:

  • You need to control pace and spread fees by course.
  • You can reach an exam city on fixed dates.
  • You would rather prove yourself through a qualifier than rely on Class 12 marks.
  • You value the data-science-leaning framing and the Diploma in Data Analytics for Business.

Choose neither (or look at a third option) if you want pure software engineering, a guaranteed outcome, or full-time campus life. My Masai social growth write-up explains how I know Masai's marketing side; it tells you nothing about which degree is better academically.

Other sources worth reading

For the Jodhpur side, Careers360's programme guide summarises the curriculum by year, and Masai School lists the delivery partner's programmes. For a wider view of other IIT online degrees, IIT Guwahati's Data Science and AI page shows a third model (trimesters on Coursera). Secondary summaries can lag the official pages, so use them to find questions, not answers.

Questions to ask each institute

  1. What exactly is the exam format and location, and what is the policy if I miss one?
  2. What is the total expected fee for a typical full-time path, in writing?
  3. What are the refund and deferral rules?
  4. How is the degree certificate worded, and is the mode (online or hybrid) mentioned on it?
  5. What support exists for internships or careers, and what is promised versus described?
  6. Can I see a current student's actual weekly time commitment?

FAQ

Is IIT Madras's management degree harder to get into than IIT Jodhpur's?

They are different. IIT Jodhpur requires a Class 12 percentage and an entrance test. IIT Madras requires completing four weeks of foundation coursework and clearing a qualifier exam. Difficulty depends on whether you are better at exams on aptitude or at sustained coursework.

Which one is cheaper?

IIT Jodhpur's total tuition is ₹5,60,000 per its official page. IIT Madras's total depends on courses registered; a secondary source reports about ₹4 lakh, but check official page for current numbers.

Do both give an IIT degree?

Both pages describe degrees from the respective IIT. Read the certificate wording and the recognition notes on each official page, since a non-campus programme may be described differently from a campus one.

Can I work full-time and do either degree?

Both are designed to allow it. IIT Madras explicitly says working professionals can take 5 to 8 years. IIT Jodhpur has live weekend sessions, so check the schedule against your job.

Do I need Maths in Class 12?

IIT Jodhpur's official page says any stream. IIT Madras's page requires Class 12 with English; check each page for any subject-specific wording.

Which has the better placement support?

I can't verify placement outcomes for either. IIT Madras's page mentions career support through its outreach centre; IIT Jodhpur's lists career paths but no guarantee. Ask for documented numbers, not testimonials.

Can I exit early?

Yes at both. IIT Jodhpur offers a certificate, diploma and two BS exits. IIT Madras offers a Foundation certificate and a Diploma in Data Analytics for Business.

Which is better for a future MBA?

I can't verify admission policies for MBA programmes from either degree. Check the target MBA's eligibility rules and confirm that a degree delivered online or hybrid is accepted.

Is there a third option?

Yes: IIT Guwahati, IIT Patna and IIT Jodhpur's own BSc in Applied AI and Data Science are covered in my online IIT BS degrees comparison.
