There is no verified ranking of AEO marketers in India, so nobody can honestly be called "the best" as a fact. What you can do is judge any candidate against criteria: whether they explain their method, measure across several AI engines, build SEO foundations, show baselines, and refuse to guarantee outcomes. This post sets out nine such criteria, as of 4 October 2026, and says plainly where I, Younus Fardeen, fit against them.
Disclosure: I own this site and I am an AEO and organic growth marketer, so I have a stake in this question. I have not tried to rank myself. I have written the criteria first and then marked my own position, including the gaps, so you can judge the work rather than the claim.
Key Takeaways
- No credible public ranking of "best AEO marketer in India" exists. Treat any page declaring a winner, including a page like this one, with suspicion unless the criteria are shown.
- Judge on method, measurement, SEO foundations, evidence, honesty and fit, not on tool logos or follower counts.
- Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so strong fundamentals should be a baseline expectation.
- AI answers vary from one response to the next, so anyone guaranteeing placement is selling something they cannot control.
- A short paid audit or pilot tells you more than any pitch.
- Where I fit: 4+ years in marketing, edtech and startup work, and the Masai School social growth case (Instagram 26K to 117K, LinkedIn 50K to 200K). That is social growth, not an AEO result, and I say so below.
What an AEO marketer actually does
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a brand's content and reputation easier for AI answer systems and search features to find, understand and cite. The term overlaps with GEO and "AI SEO". SEO.com argues that it is "AEO and SEO", not one versus the other, and I agree.
In practice an AEO marketer works on four things: which questions your buyers ask AI assistants, whether your pages answer them clearly, whether third-party sources describe you consistently, and how you measure presence over time. For the wider scope question, see the pricing section below.
Why "best" is the wrong question
Three reasons.
- No shared scoreboard. Unlike a rankings contest, there is no public leaderboard of AEO practitioners, and no independent body that certifies them. Any list that crowns a winner is either self-published or sponsored.
- Results depend on the client. Site authority, category competition and starting point differ. A strong result on one site does not transfer automatically.
- The channel is unstable. SparkToro's research with 600 volunteers and 2,961 prompts found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI would give the same brand list in two responses to the same prompt. Outcomes in AI answers are not something anyone can promise.
So the useful question is "which marketer is right for my situation, and how will I know?" The nine criteria below are built to answer that. They draw on what independent and vendor guides say buyers should check, noted where used.
The 9 criteria
| # | Criterion | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plain-language method | Can explain month-one changes to your site | "Proprietary framework" |
| 2 | SEO foundations | Crawlability, indexation, content quality first | Skips basics |
| 3 | Real query research | Buyer questions, not just brand terms | Cannot produce a list |
| 4 | Multi-engine measurement | Tracks engines separately, many runs | One "AI visibility score" |
| 5 | Off-site work | Plans for third-party mentions and profiles | Only edits your site |
| 6 | Evidence with baselines | Start, time frame, actions, other changes | Percentages with no denominator |
| 7 | Honest about limits | No guarantees, states what is unknown | "Guaranteed #1 in ChatGPT" |
| 8 | Business-outcome reporting | Links visibility to leads or revenue | Visibility only |
| 9 | Fit and transparency | Clear scope, ownership of assets, short terms | Long lock-in, vague scope |
1. A method explained in plain language
Ask: "What would you change on my site in the first month, and why?" SEO.com lists secretive methods as a red flag, and WebFX's guide names inability to explain methodology in plain language as one too. If the answer is jargon, move on.
Where I fit: I work from an audit to a prioritised list, and I lay out the steps in how I audit a brand's AI visibility. You can read the method before you ever speak to me.
2. SEO foundations come first
Google's documentation on AI features and your website says pages must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. So a marketer who treats AEO as separate from crawlability, content quality and internal linking is skipping the part Google itself points to.
Where I fit: my background is SEO and content strategy first. AEO is the layer I add on top, not a replacement.
3. Real buyer-query research
DoodleWeb's hiring guide says a real AEO provider can produce the actual questions prospects ask AI assistants, not only branded keywords. Ask for a sample prompt list during the first call. A candidate who cannot produce one has not done the work.
Where I fit: I build a prompt set from sales questions, support tickets, search data and competitor comparisons, then review it with you.
4. Multi-engine, repeated measurement
Because outputs vary, one screenshot proves nothing. SparkToro's authors called ranking position in AI answers unreliable and described visibility percentage across many runs as a reasonable metric. DoodleWeb likewise says real providers track engines separately.
Where I fit: I report visibility as a percentage across a defined prompt set, per engine, with the date and the run count. I will not give you a single magic score.
5. Off-site and third-party work
Savage Audit's checklist lists entity clarity and off-page corroboration among the things an AEO audit should cover. A marketer who only edits your own pages is ignoring how AI systems describe brands from outside sources.
Where I fit: my social and community background is relevant here. I treat consistent, honest brand presence across platforms as part of the job.
6. Evidence with baselines
Ask every candidate for a case with a starting number, a time frame, the actions taken and what else changed.
Where I fit, honestly: the case I can point to is Masai School, where Instagram grew from 26K to 117K and LinkedIn from 50K to 200K, covered in the full case study. Those are follower figures for organic social, not AI-citation results. I am not going to present them as AEO proof. They show I can build and run a long, system-led organic programme in edtech, which is the discipline AEO depends on. If AEO-specific numbers matter most to you, ask me what I can and cannot show, and compare that with other candidates.
7. Honesty about limits
Any promise of guaranteed placement fails the SparkToro test above. I cover this in GEO agency red flags. The same rule applies to me: I will not guarantee a citation, a mention or a position.
8. Reporting tied to business outcomes
Visibility is a leading indicator. WebFX's guide asks how an agency defines success beyond visibility metrics. Ask the same of an individual. You want leads, enquiries or pipeline tied to the work wherever that can be measured, and a frank statement where it cannot.
9. Fit, scope and terms
Check what you own at the end, how long the commitment is, and what you are expected to provide. A short paid audit or three-month pilot is a sensible starting point for most buyers. Savage Audit suggests asking what a provider needs from you; good ones will want positioning, sales objections and competitors.
Individual, freelancer or agency?
India has independent practitioners, small specialist studios and large agencies working on AEO. Each has trade-offs.
- Individual specialist: direct access, lower overhead, but limited capacity and one person's skills.
- Small studio: more breadth, still reasonably close contact.
- Large agency: bigger teams and tooling, but more layers and often more bundled services.
I wrote a longer comparison in hire an AEO marketer vs an SEO agency.
A scorecard you can copy
Score each candidate 0 (absent), 1 (partial) or 2 (clear and evidenced) on the nine criteria. Anyone scoring 0 on criteria 1, 2 or 7 should be dropped regardless of total. Then ask each for a reference you can contact and a sample of their work. Score me the same way, and if another candidate scores higher for your situation, hire them.
Questions to ask in the first call
- Which engines do you track and how many runs per prompt?
- Show me a buyer-question list you built for a past client (anonymised is fine).
- What would you not do for us, and why?
- What did a past engagement fail to achieve?
- What do you need from my team each month?
- What do I own if we stop?
Pricing: what I can and cannot say
Published ranges differ and mostly come from agencies selling the service. 310 Creative quotes tiers from roughly $1,000 to $3,500 per month at entry level up to $15,000 to $50,000 or more for enterprise, and DoodleWeb cites $4,000 to $15,000 per month for real programmes. Treat both as vendor claims. They are US-oriented and not Indian market benchmarks. I have not verified an India-specific benchmark, so I will not invent one. Compare scope and deliverables instead.
FAQ
Who is the best AEO marketer in India?
Nobody can be named as a verified best, because there is no independent ranking or certification. The honest approach is to judge candidates against criteria such as method, measurement, evidence and honesty. I am one option and am happy to be assessed on those terms.
How do I verify an AEO marketer's claims?
Ask for baselines, time frames and what else changed, then contact a reference. Be cautious of percentage gains with no starting number. Check whether the example shows AI visibility or only traditional metrics.
Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap heavily. Google says no special optimizations are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible. AEO adds attention to prompts, citations, third-party mentions and answer-friendly content on top of SEO.
Can an AEO marketer guarantee ChatGPT mentions?
No. AI outputs vary between responses, as SparkToro's study showed, and the systems belong to other companies. A guarantee is a reason to walk away.
What does an AEO marketer cost in India?
I have not verified a reliable India benchmark. Published figures are mostly vendor, US-oriented ranges. Compare scopes and start with a paid audit or short pilot.
Should I hire an individual or an agency?
It depends on scope and budget. Individuals offer direct access and focus; agencies offer capacity and breadth. Whichever you choose, apply the same nine criteria.
How long before AEO shows results?
Published estimates differ: SEO.com suggests a few weeks for first citations, while 310 Creative says meaningful returns take three to six months. These are vendor claims, so agree a baseline and a review point such as 90 days.
Do you work with edtech and startups?
Yes. My background is in edtech and startup marketing, including the Masai School social growth work. Whether I fit your category is something to test through an audit and a conversation.
Is this post biased?
Yes, in one way: I own the site and I sell this service. I have tried to counter that by putting the criteria ahead of my position and by naming where my evidence is limited.
