Engine guide: AI Mode

How to get cited in Google AI Mode

AI Mode shares Google's index with AI Overviews but behaves like a research assistant. It runs a burst of related searches for every prompt, which widens the pool of pages that can be linked.

The short answer

Google AI Mode answers from the same Google Search index as AI Overviews, crawled by Googlebot, but it uses a query fan-out technique: it splits a question into many sub-queries and searches them together. Pages get cited by answering one of those sub-questions precisely, so depth on specific follow-ups matters more than ranking for the headline query.

What ranked on 26 September 2026: Most pages ranking for this query treat AI Mode as a synonym for AI Overviews. Google's own descriptions of query fan-out are the clearest explanation of why the two surfaces cite different pages for the same topic.

How AI Mode differs from AI Overviews

Same index, same crawler, same snippet controls. The difference is in how many searches run behind one answer and how long the conversation continues.

  • Query fan-out means one prompt can trigger many searches across subtopics, so a narrow page can be cited for a broad question
  • Follow-up prompts keep context, so a brand named in the first answer is more likely to be compared or expanded on in the next one
  • Answers are longer and carry more links, grouped beside the text rather than only at the end
  • Prompts in AI Mode are longer and more conversational than typed searches, which rewards pages written around full questions
  • Performance data is folded into Search Console's web search totals, like AI Overviews

Things that sound right and are not

  • ClaimIf we win AI Overviews we have won AI Mode.

Different mechanics produce different source sets. Test both. A page that owns the overview for a head term can be absent from AI Mode, which prefers pages covering the sub-questions.

  • ClaimOne comprehensive pillar page is enough.

Fan-out rewards precise passages. A pillar with vague sections loses to a set of pages that each answer one sub-question exactly, linked together.

  • ClaimWe cannot measure AI Mode at all.

Search Console blends it in, but manual sampling works: log a fixed prompt set, the links shown and their order each month.

Where to start

  1. 01Take your five most valuable topics and write out the eight to ten sub-questions a buyer would ask about each.
  2. 02Map each sub-question to an existing page or a section; the gaps are what to write next.
  3. 03Give each section a heading phrased as the sub-question and a direct answer beneath it.
  4. 04Link related sections so Googlebot and readers can move between them.
  5. 05Sample prompts in AI Mode monthly, including one follow-up each, and record which of your URLs are linked.

Questions

Does AI Mode use a different crawler?
No. Google documents Googlebot as the crawler for its AI search features, and the standard robots and snippet controls apply.
Is AI Mode available everywhere?
Google has expanded it across many countries and languages, but availability can lag in some markets. Test from the locations your buyers search from.
Does structured data matter more here?
Google gives it the same role as in regular search: helping it understand the page. It is not a documented ranking factor for AI Mode.
