ORM is a community design problem

Reply templates do not fix reputation. A creator pipeline does. What the Creator in Residence program actually changed.

Brand identity design work, illustrating orm-is-community-design

Most brands treat online reputation as a support function. Someone watches the mentions, someone drafts a reply, sentiment is reported monthly and nobody's mind is changed.

That is triage, not reputation. Reputation is what other people say when you are not in the thread.

In education, the brand is the least credible voice

Prospective learners discount marketing copy on sight. They believe three things: a named alumnus, a specific outcome, and a stranger on Reddit with nothing to sell.

So the job is not writing better replies. It is making sure credible people are already in the conversation.

Creator in Residence

I built a rolling cohort of student creators. Selection, onboarding, briefs, review, amplification, all designed once and run every batch.

The rules that mattered:

  • Select on voice and platform fluency, not follower count
  • Give briefs with format guardrails, never scripts
  • Let them publish on their own handles first
  • Amplify from the brand second

Learners produced content that performed because they were the audience. Nothing the brand wrote could match that.

One playbook per surface

The same response template fails everywhere at once. Each surface has its own culture:

  • Quora rewards long-form, structured, genuinely useful answers
  • Reddit punishes anything that reads like marketing, immediately
  • Google reviews need brevity, specifics, and no defensiveness
  • YouTube comments are public and permanent, so tone is the whole game

Four playbooks, four tones, one escalation path.

Alumni as a distribution layer

Every brand post that featured an alumnus used a tagging convention they re-shared. That gave each post a built-in second wave with no ask and no budget.

Do that consistently and your reach stops being a function of your follower count.

What compounds

New cohort, new advocates. The pipeline does not reset each quarter, it accumulates. That is the part a reply template can never do.

Build the community and the comments take care of themselves.
