Google appears to be showing a WhatsApp button in local panels in Search, letting people start a chat with a business from the listing. As of 9 October 2026 it looks like a test or partial rollout: one tester saw it vanish a day later, and no region list has been published. The sensible move is to set up your WhatsApp chat link properly now, with a plan to answer messages quickly, so you are ready if it sticks.

Key Takeaways

  • Search Engine Watch reported the test on 5 October 2026, and Search Engine Roundtable confirmed on 7 October that it could reproduce it.
  • The button can appear alongside or in place of the existing chat option next to call, directions, website and share buttons.
  • It is not confirmed as a full rollout; Barry Schwartz says only that it "might be rolled out fully."
  • Google has previously asked businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their profiles and, per Schwartz, added numbers itself for some businesses a few months ago.
  • Setup is quick, but the real work is response time, staffing and consent.
  • For India-based businesses, where WhatsApp is the default channel for many customers, this matters more than the rest of the news cycle.

What was actually reported

On 5 October 2026, Sachin Patel wrote on Search Engine Watch that "Google appears to be testing a new WhatsApp button within Local Results." He tested in Incognito mode, shared a screenshot, and noted the button was gone when he checked a day later. He had not found other reports and assumed, without confirming, that tapping it opens a WhatsApp chat with the business.

On 7 October, Barry Schwartz followed up on Search Engine Roundtable. He said he could reproduce the button, so it "might be rolled out fully." The article does not say which regions or business types see it. Schwartz also cited two earlier reports: Google asking businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their profiles, and Google adding WhatsApp numbers in bulk.

If you manage listings, treat this as a heads-up, not a feature launch. I would not tell a client "WhatsApp is live on Google" yet.

Why this matters for local SEO

Local panel buttons are conversion paths. Each button removes a step between search and contact. A WhatsApp button changes three things:

  1. Lead channel shift. Some calls and form fills become chats. Your tracking has to cope.
  2. Response expectations. A chat feels immediate. A reply after two days looks worse than an unanswered call.
  3. Asynchronous convenience. People can send photos, locations and questions without a phone call, which suits service businesses.

BrightLocal's guide to Google Business Profile messaging explains the background: Google removed its original GBP messaging in 2024 and, per BrightLocal, added chat via WhatsApp or SMS at the start of 2025. It says the chat option shows on mobile only, appears above the hours and phone number, and is set up in the profile editor's Chat section with a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or an SMS number. Those are BrightLocal's descriptions, so verify the current editor wording on your own profile, since Google changes this interface often.

How to set up WhatsApp on your Business Profile

I have not seen a single Google help page covering the WhatsApp setup that I could open, so this follows BrightLocal's walkthrough plus what I check in practice. Confirm the steps in your own dashboard.

  1. Use a business number. Do not publish a personal WhatsApp account. Use WhatsApp Business or an approved API provider.
  2. Create a click-to-chat link for that number.
  3. Open your Business Profile editor and find the Chat section.
  4. Add the WhatsApp link, save, and wait for review. It may not appear immediately.
  5. Test on a phone. Search your business name on mobile, check the listing and tap the chat option.
  6. Check for duplicates. If Google added a number automatically, review it and correct it if it is wrong.

Third-party guides such as SleekFlow's WhatsApp-GBP guide and Trengo's guide cover the same ground and discuss routing chats into a shared inbox; Authkey's step-by-step and ShiftFlow's playbook were also returned in my search for setup instructions. They are vendor content selling their own tools, so use them for ideas, not for policy.

The operational plan nobody writes about

Switching on a chat link is easy. Running it is the hard part. Schwartz himself joked that "I can't imagine the Apple Store has time and resources to WhatsApp with customers." Big or small, the same constraint applies.

Decide who answers, and when

Write down opening hours for chat, an owner for each shift and a maximum response time. If nobody can answer within a few hours, consider not publishing the link.

Prepare four saved replies

  • Greeting with hours and what you can help with
  • Price or availability enquiry
  • Booking or visit request, including address
  • Out-of-hours message with next steps

Keep personal data safe

Do not collect sensitive information in chat. If you are in India, confirm your obligations under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act with a lawyer, and make sure customers know how their messages are used. This is not legal advice.

Avoid unsolicited messaging

A listing chat button invites inbound conversations. It does not give you permission to message people later in bulk. Follow WhatsApp's own business messaging rules for anything outbound. For a wider look at WhatsApp as a brand channel, see my earlier piece on Meta's Muse agent and WhatsApp for brands.

Measuring chat leads

Google may not report WhatsApp taps separately in your profile insights. I would not assume it does. What I would do:

  • Use a unique click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message such as "Hi, I found you on Google" so you can tag conversations by source.
  • Log chats in a simple sheet or your CRM with a source field.
  • Compare weekly counts with calls and direction requests from Business Profile performance data.
  • Review after four weeks: volume, response time, conversion to booking or sale.

If the test disappears, you lose nothing; the link remains useful on your website, Instagram and email signatures.

Which businesses benefit most

  • Clinics, salons and gyms with booking questions
  • Home services where customers send a photo
  • Real estate and car dealers with viewing requests
  • Coaching centres and training providers answering admission questions
  • Restaurants with reservation or catering enquiries

BrightLocal's guide lists restaurants, salons, gyms, real estate agents and chauffeur services as suitable. It argues many consumers, especially Gen Z, prefer messaging to calls, citing a LivePerson report. I have not opened that report, so treat the preference claim as secondary.

A one-week plan

  • Day 1: Audit your Business Profile: name, category, hours, phone, website, existing chat options.
  • Day 2: Create the WhatsApp Business number and click-to-chat link with a tracking message.
  • Day 3: Add it in the Chat section and test on mobile.
  • Day 4: Write saved replies and assign owners.
  • Day 5: Add the same link to your website contact page.
  • Day 6-7: Test response times, then decide whether to keep it live.

Verified as of 9 October 2026 against the reports linked above; the feature may change or disappear.

FAQ

Is the WhatsApp button live for everyone?

No. Search Engine Watch saw it in a test and Search Engine Roundtable reproduced it, but neither article says where it is available. Treat it as limited until Google says otherwise.

Do I have to add WhatsApp to my Business Profile?

Not required, but if you want the chat option to be accurate and under your control, add your own business number. Google has reportedly added numbers itself for some businesses, so check yours.

Does the chat option show on desktop?

BrightLocal says the chat option shows on mobile only. Confirm on your own listing, as Google can change this.

Will WhatsApp chat improve my local rankings?

There is no evidence in these reports that it does. It affects conversion after someone finds you, not ranking.

Should I use a personal WhatsApp number?

No. Use a business number so you can share access, protect your privacy and keep records.

How do I track leads from the button?

Use a click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message, log the source in your CRM, and compare with call and direction counts.

Is this relevant outside India?

The button was reported in Google Search generally, and WhatsApp is widely used in many markets, but the articles do not list countries.

What if I cannot answer chats quickly?

Do not publish the link yet. A slow chat damages trust more than a visible phone number would.

Where can I read the original reports?

Search Engine Watch (5 October 2026) and Search Engine Roundtable (7 October 2026), both linked above.
