On 7 October 2026 Instagram added a carousel editor to its Edits app. It lets you combine photos, videos and text on one canvas across several slides, stretch an image or headline across slides, reuse saved fonts and presets, and post straight to Instagram or download the file. As of 14 October 2026 it is reported as live on iOS, with Android "coming soon". It makes carousel production faster and more consistent, but it does not change what makes a carousel worth swiping.

Key Takeaways

  • The editor sits in Edits under Projects, then the plus button, then Carousel, per coverage of Instagram's announcement.
  • Reported features: preset layouts with padding and spacing controls, cutout stickers, colour grading, scale and rotation, images or headlines that run across slides, and carry-over of fonts, colours and text styles from other Edits projects.
  • You can share directly to Instagram or download for other platforms, which reportedly avoids export and re-upload steps.
  • Reports do not state a slide limit, file-size limits or number of templates. Check in-app before you plan a 15-slide series.
  • Evidence that carousels outperform other formats comes from third parties and varies; test on your own account.

What launched

Social Media Today reported on 7 October that Instagram added carousel creation and editing to Edits, which had focused on video. It quotes Instagram's pitch of dropping in photos and videos, playing with layouts and repurposing Edits fonts and text styles, and says the feature is live on iOS with Android "coming soon".

NetInfluencer attributes a quote to Edits designer Dan Moreno: "When we asked creators what they hoped Edits could do next, carousels came up again and again." T2 Online and Mobigyaan describe the same feature set, including adding slides via the plus button or by pulling from the right edge, and a menu to duplicate, insert or reorder slides.

One earlier mention is worth noting. A German trade site, OnlineMarketing.de, had reported the editor as an early-access Labs feature found by a creator. The October announcement appears to be the wider release of that test. That article's authors could not test it themselves, so I use it only for context.

Why a workflow matters more than the tool

I have seen teams adopt a new editor and produce more carousels but not better ones. The tool removes friction; it does not supply the idea, the proof or the ending. The workflow below keeps the focus where it belongs.

A designer arranging social media slides on a tablet

A shared canvas for photos, video and text makes a consistent series quicker to produce.

Step 1: Write the slide list before opening the app

Draft one sentence per slide in a notes app.

  • Slide 1: the promise (a specific problem or question).
  • Slides 2 to 6: one point each, with one proof item per point (a screenshot, a number you can source, a short quote).
  • Final slide: one next step (save, share, or comment a specific word).

If you cannot fill the middle slides with real material, the topic is not ready.

Step 2: Build your brand preset once

Create a project with your fonts, colours and text styles, then save presets. According to reports, saved fonts, styles, colours and presets for adjustments, audio and text styles carry over between projects. Name the project "Brand template" and duplicate it for each new carousel, so you never rebuild the style from scratch.

Step 3: Make the cover slide do the work

Use a cutout of a person or product with a large headline. Reports say a headline can span slides; use that deliberately for slide 1 into slide 2 so the headline invites the swipe. Keep text large enough to read on a small phone.

Step 4: Keep one idea per slide

Use the layout tool for comparison slides (before and after, two options) and a plain layout for explanation. Avoid putting more than about 25 to 30 words on a slide. That is my rule of thumb, not an Instagram rule.

Step 5: Add motion only where it helps

Because the canvas supports video, a three-second clip can demonstrate a step better than a still. Use it for one or two slides, not all of them, so the file stays light and the sequence stays readable.

Step 6: Export, check, and caption

Share straight to Instagram or download. Check the first slide's crop in the grid view of your profile, add slide-specific captions if you use them, and write alt text. Then pin your next-step instruction in the caption.

Instagram's own composer already lets you create carousels, and OnlineMarketing.de notes the Edits version offers more creative tools. Use this table to choose:

SituationBetter choice
Quick three-photo post, no stylingInstagram app
Branded series with fonts, colours and cutoutsEdits
Mix of video clips and photo slidesEdits
Android-only teamInstagram app for now (Edits carousel is iOS first per reports)
Need the same file for LinkedInEdits (download option)

Be careful here. Social Media Today's article notes that Buffer reported carousels earn about 12% more engagement per post than single-image or single-video posts (the article attributes this to Buffer's reporting "last year", so treat it as historical). It also paraphrases Instagram's Adam Mosseri as saying carousels can boost engagement and reach, noting this was in 2024. Neither is a promise for your account.

The Close, a real estate trade site, applied the editor to property listings and flagged that its cited Socialinsider finding came from brand accounts, not agents, so similar results are not guaranteed. That caveat applies to every niche.

What I would do is a simple test: publish four carousels made in Edits and four in your old workflow over a month, same topics mix, and compare saves, shares and non-follower reach. If you want to check what Instagram says about ranking more broadly, see my notes on Instagram's ranking principles from Mosseri.

Ideas for edtech, startups and personal brands

  • Syllabus explainers. One slide per module, each with a plain-language outcome. Avoid placement or salary promises.
  • Founder opinions. A cutout of the founder, a bold claim on slide 1, evidence on slides 2 to 5.
  • Comparison carousels. "How to evaluate a bootcamp" as a checklist, with the same questions you would want answered.
  • Myth versus fact. Alternating slides, each sourced.
  • Reusing webinar clips. Pull three 5-second clips into slides.

For a worked view of how I think about organic social at scale, see my Masai School case study, where I worked on follower growth. As disclosure, that is my own work and the format here is different from carousels in Edits.

Risks and limits

  • iOS first. Reports say Android is coming soon, with no date.
  • Unknown caps. Slide limits and file sizes were not in the coverage I read.
  • Brand drift. Fast production can mean sloppy proofing. Have a second person read every slide.
  • Over-reliance on layouts. If all your carousels look identical, followers will skim past them.
  • Platform dependency. Edits is Meta's app. Keep your source files in a folder you control.

FAQ

It is a new tool in Meta's Edits app that lets you combine photos, videos and text across multiple slides and post the result to Instagram or download it. Instagram announced it around 7 October 2026.

Open Edits, go to Projects, tap the plus icon, choose Carousel, add your media, arrange and style the slides, then share. Steps are as reported by Mobigyaan and The Close.

Reports say it is live on iOS, with Android "coming soon". No launch date was given in the coverage I read.

The sources I read do not state a maximum. Check the app, and confirm Instagram's own current carousel limit before you plan a long series.

Can I post directly to Instagram from Edits?

Yes. Reports say you can share straight to Instagram or download the finished carousel to use on other platforms.

Can a headline run across several slides?

Reports say yes. A photo can continue from one slide to the next, and a headline can stretch across slides.

Third-party reports say carousels can earn more engagement, such as a Buffer figure of about 12% reported by Social Media Today. These are not guarantees, so test on your own account.

Is Edits free?

The Close describes Edits as a free app. I did not find pricing for the carousel editor specifically, so check in the app.

Do I need Edits to make good carousels?

No. A good carousel is about the idea and proof. Edits mainly saves time and keeps your style consistent.
