Google Search profiles, shareable pages that gather a creator's or publisher's accounts, sites and posts in one place, became available to creators and publishers in India and Canada on 6 October 2026, according to Search Engine Roundtable. Google's help page now lists Canada, India and the United States, requires at least 10,000 followers on one of YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok, and says a profile does not directly change how your content ranks. (As of 9 October 2026.)
Key Takeaways
- The expansion to India and Canada was announced on 6 October 2026 by Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, with Brazil "rolling out soon" and no date.
- Google's help page lists the eligibility rules: 18 or older, content that meets Google's policies, and 10,000 subscribers or followers on at least one of YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok.
- Google says a profile "doesn't directly change how your content ranks"; followers who find it may see more of your content on Discover.
- Check whether Google already generated a profile for you before creating one.
- Treat it as an identity and distribution asset, not a ranking lever, and keep your own site as the source of truth.
What was announced
The news
Search Engine Roundtable reported on 6 October that Search profiles expand to India and Canada, with Brazil coming soon. Robby Stein wrote on X: "One of our most requested updates for Search profiles is live today: expanding to new countries!" Search Engine Journal's coverage adds that profiles launched in the US in June and that Stein described them as a "dedicated home base on Google" for creators and publishers.
A small discrepancy worth knowing
At midday on 6 October, SEJ noted that Google's help page still said profiles were "currently only available in the United States". When I opened the help page for this post, it listed Canada, India and the United States, so it has since been updated. Help pages change without notice, so check it again before you act.
What a Search profile is
Per Google's help page, a Search profile gathers your content from multiple platforms in one place, making it easier for users to find you and your work on Google Search and Google Discover. SEJ describes it as a claimable page that collects articles and social posts. Followers may see more of that content in Discover.
Who is eligible, step by step
The rules on Google's help page
- You must be at least 18 (someone 18 or older can manage a profile for a person under 18 from their own Google Account).
- Your content must meet Google's policy guidelines.
- You need at least 10,000 subscribers or followers on at least one of YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok.
- Countries listed: Canada, India and the United States.
- You can create up to 10 separate profiles for eligible brands or identities from one Google account.
One point I could not verify: whether publishers without a qualifying social following can get a profile in India. The help page's eligibility is expressed through those four platforms, so a publisher with a strong site but small social accounts may not qualify. Check the page directly.
How to claim
- Search your own name on Google and look for View Search Profile under your knowledge panel. Google may already have generated one.
- If not, go to profile.google.com/claim and sign in with the Google Account you want to use.
- Sign in to at least one qualifying platform account, optionally add more, and click Create Profile.
What a Search profile does and does not do
It does
- Gives you one place that Google associates with your name across platforms.
- May help people who follow you see more of your content in Discover.
- Is a controllable identity surface where you choose which accounts to link.
It does not
- Directly change rankings. Google's help page says so explicitly.
- Replace your website, your Search Console data or your schema.
- Guarantee any traffic. I have seen no data on click-through from profiles in India.
SEJ makes the same point: creating a profile does not directly affect a source's ranking in Google Search.
Search profiles versus Preferred sources
These two features are often confused. They are different tools for different jobs.
| Search profiles | Preferred sources | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | A person or brand identity | A domain or subdomain |
| What it gathers | Social accounts, sites, posts | Selections by readers |
| Main surface | Search and Discover | Top Stories, AI Overviews, AI Mode |
| Ranking effect | None directly, per Google | Selected sites more likely to appear for users who chose them |
| Eligibility | 18+, 10,000 followers on a listed platform | Domain or subdomain; subdirectories not eligible |
The preferred sources facts come from Google's Search Central documentation. I cover the new emails in a separate post.
A practical plan for an Indian creator or publisher
Step 1: Decide whether you qualify
Check the follower counts on your YouTube, Instagram, X and TikTok accounts against the 10,000 threshold. If you are under it, do not buy followers to qualify. That would be exactly the kind of thing that harms trust.
Step 2: Clean the accounts you will link
A profile is only as good as what it points to. Before linking, check that:
- Your name and handle are consistent across platforms.
- Bios say the same true thing in each place.
- Old, off-topic or spammy posts are removed or archived.
- Any claimed credentials are real. Google's guidance on authorship warns that false credentials are deception; see my post on fake author bios.
Step 3: Make your site the hub
Your website should state who you are, link to the same social accounts, and carry an author page for each real writer. Where relevant, use the Schema.org Person type with sameAs links to your profiles, consistent with what readers can see. A Search profile is easier for Google to connect to you when your own site makes the same claims.
Step 4: Claim or verify the profile
Follow the claim steps above. If Google generated a profile that is wrong, use the options in the help page to correct it. Record the date you claimed it and what you linked.
Step 5: Track what you can
There is no dedicated Search Console report for profiles that I found. Use your own indicators: branded search impressions in Search Console, Discover performance if your site is eligible, and follower growth by platform. Compare before and after, with a note of the date on which you claimed the profile.
What this means by role
Individual creators
If you are an educator, founder or consultant with an audience, a profile is a low-effort way to claim your name. It also helps against impersonation, since an official, controlled page exists.
Publishers and brands
You can create up to 10 profiles, per Google's help page, so a brand can have separate identities for separate shows or titles. Plan which ones before you create them.
Agencies
Do not claim profiles on behalf of clients without clear authority and their Google Accounts. Profiles are tied to identities and platform sign-ins, so handle access carefully.
Risks and things to watch
- Policy compliance. Content must meet Google's policies. If your accounts post spam or misleading claims, the profile highlights them. Read the spam policies and the people-first content guidance.
- Platform dependency. Your follower thresholds depend on third-party platforms. A banned account affects eligibility.
- Moving rules. Help pages and availability change. The 6 October coverage already differed from the live page within hours.
- Over-claiming. Do not tell clients a profile will lift rankings. Google says it does not.
My view
I have 4+ years in organic growth, and I treat each of these Google features as a small bet: cheap to set up, unlikely to transform anything, and worth doing if the identity work is already done. The valuable work is the boring part: consistent names, real bios, a site that backs up your claims. Do that and any new surface Google launches will find you in good order.
Sources and limits
Opened: Search Engine Roundtable, Search Engine Journal, Google's Search profiles help page, Search Central preferred sources documentation, Schema.org Person. I did not open Robby Stein's X post; I rely on the quote as reported. I found no India-specific requirements beyond those on the help page, and no performance data.
FAQ
When did Google Search profiles launch in India?
Search Engine Roundtable reports availability for India and Canada starting 6 October 2026, announced by Robby Stein. Brazil was described as coming soon with no date.
What do I need to qualify?
Google's help page says you must be 18 or older, meet content policy guidelines, and have at least 10,000 subscribers or followers on at least one of YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok.
Will a Search profile improve my rankings?
No, not directly. Google's help page says creating a profile does not directly change how your content ranks. Followers who find it may see more of your content on Discover.
How do I check if Google already made a profile for me?
Search your name and click View Search Profile under your knowledge panel, if one appears. If not, go to profile.google.com/claim.
Can a business or publisher have one?
The help page says you can create up to 10 profiles for eligible brands or identities from one Google account. Eligibility still runs through the follower requirement on a listed platform.
Does it work in Hindi or other Indian languages?
I could not find language details in the sources I opened. Check Google's help page.
Is there a Search Console report for profiles?
I did not find one. Track proxies such as branded impressions and Discover, and note the date you claimed.
Are Search profiles the same as Preferred sources?
No. Profiles are for people and brands across platforms. Preferred sources lets readers select a domain to see more often in Top Stories and AI features.
Should agencies set these up for clients?
Only with the client's authority and their Google Account. The profile is tied to an identity and linked platform sign-ins.
Is it worth it if I have under 10,000 followers?
You cannot qualify yet under the stated rule. Spend the time on your website, author pages and consistent identity instead.
