Two ChatGPT changes landed in the same week of October 2026: a new interface, reported as "Intelligent UI", that adds interactive charts, buttons and calculators to answers, and a new visual ad format that will test in the US later this month alongside image generation. Neither is a ranking system you can optimise for directly, but both change how brands appear inside ChatGPT. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is still unclear and gives you a short list of things to test. Facts are as of 9 October 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • The new interface began rolling out on 7 October 2026 to paid tiers and on 8 October to Free and Go, per TechCrunch's reporting; users can reduce the number of visuals.
  • Visual ads were announced on 5 October 2026, start testing later in October in the US, and will appear alongside image generation results from an initial group of advertisers.
  • ChatGPT ads were already live on Free and Go tiers in other markets, including India since 29 August 2026 per PPC Land; Plus, Pro and Enterprise are excluded.
  • OpenAI has not said how visual ads will be targeted or whether they show during generation or after it; critics doubt the intent signal.
  • For organic teams, the actionable work is making your data, comparisons and product facts easy to represent in a visual answer.

What changed in the interface

TechCrunch reported on 7 October that OpenAI is launching a new ChatGPT interface that adds interactive visuals to conversations. Examples include tappable buttons, custom task calculators, and interactive, editable charts and graphs. Rollout began on Wednesday for Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise users globally, and Free and Go users were due to receive it on Thursday. TechCrunch says users can reduce the number of visuals in responses. Demonstrations covered an airplane wing lift diagram, recipe visuals, a bicycle mechanics diagram, a multi-day hiking map and a personal savings calculator (TechCrunch).

A second report from Let's Data Science, which I treat as secondary, says the update was rolled out with a new GPT-6 model, that paid tiers use a model called GPT-6 Sol while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna, and that responses mix text with interactive elements "when OpenAI's system judges that format suits the question" (Let's Data Science). Model naming differs between sources and my own earlier notes, so I am not stating exact model specifications. My earlier posts on GPT-6.1 Sol for content teams and OpenAI DevDay for marketers have more context on the family.

TechCrunch's article does not mention advertising in the interface. Do not assume the two launches are linked.

What OpenAI announced on ads

TechCrunch's report on the visual ad format says:

  • visual display ads will appear alongside images users ask ChatGPT to generate;
  • they begin appearing later in October 2026, in the US only for now, from an "initial test group of advertisers";
  • they will be clearly labelled, and OpenAI says they will not influence ChatGPT's answers;
  • OpenAI is expanding measurement partnerships, with click-attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava, and is developing brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.

BleepingComputer's coverage adds that OpenAI says safeguards are meant to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations, and that verification partners will not get access to private user conversations. Its partner list overlaps but is not identical to TechCrunch's (it names Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversion measurement), so check OpenAI's own advertiser documentation for the current list.

The sceptic's view

The Register's report on the visual ad format raises points I think are fair. It says free users can opt out of ads but doing so disables tools including image generation, so ad-free image creation needs a Plus subscription. It notes OpenAI has not said whether ads appear as a loading screen or stay after the image, nor whether they are generated on the fly or drawn from advertiser libraries, nor how they will be targeted. It quotes Billo CEO Donatas Smailys arguing that search ads work because people are looking for something, and "Someone generating an image in ChatGPT is not shopping." Treat that as one commentator's opinion, not a finding, but it names the right open question: what intent signal does an image prompt carry?

Where ChatGPT ads already run

This is not new territory for OpenAI. According to PPC Land, ChatGPT ads were live in 41 publicly counted markets by 29 August 2026, when India went live; ads show only to Free and Go subscribers, and in India there was no self-serve access at launch, with buying through OpenAI's ads team and partners. A daily minimum of 725 rupees was listed in OpenAI's help centre. TechCrunch's India report says ads began with 50 brands, with agencies WPP and Omnicom as partners, and that a self-serve ad manager was expected the following month. Indian outlets such as Business Today also covered it (search result, not opened). Because PPC Land is a trade blog and details like minimums change, confirm on OpenAI's pages before budgeting.

What this means for organic teams

I work on organic growth, not paid media, so here is how I read the interface change.

Visual answers need structured facts

If ChatGPT can build a calculator or a comparison chart, the underlying data has to come from somewhere. Pages with clear tables, defined units, dated figures and named sources are easier to turn into charts than walls of prose. I would audit your top pages for:

  • a comparison table with labelled columns;
  • numbers stated with units and dates;
  • steps written as numbered lists;
  • clear entity names for products and prices.

This is the same work I describe in how to rank in ChatGPT, and it helps regardless of interface.

Interactive tools may beat articles for some queries

If the interface answers "how much should I save each month" with an in-chat calculator, a plain article on the same topic loses a click. That is a hypothesis, not a measured effect. Check your own analytics for informational pages that could be displaced and consider whether you offer something the chat cannot, such as proprietary data, local knowledge or a tool with saved results.

Referral tracking

Tag ChatGPT referrals so you can see changes. My earlier explainer on AI Overview tracking parameters covers attribution ideas that carry over, and ChatGPT's reported 1.2 billion weekly users post covers traffic expectations.

What this means for paid teams

If you buy ads, treat visual placements as an experiment, not a channel.

  1. Wait for specifics. No targeting detail has been published for visual ads, so there is nothing sensible to optimise yet.
  2. Apply for the test only with a hypothesis. For example: do users generating product mock-ups engage with a related product ad?
  3. Insist on measurement. Use the attribution partners OpenAI listed and run incrementality tests where available.
  4. Set a brand-safety rule. OpenAI says it is piloting suitability checks with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science; ask what that means for your category.
  5. Cap the budget. Early formats often have noisy results. Spend what you can afford to learn from.

Interactive charts and calculators inside the chat mean your data may be reshaped into a visual answer.

Mistakes I would avoid

  • Chasing the interface. You cannot optimise for an interactive chart widget directly. Optimise for clarity and accuracy.
  • Assuming ads and answers are linked. OpenAI says ads do not influence answers. I have no evidence either way, so keep organic and paid strategies separate.
  • Quoting unverified ad copy. I saw a claim that ad wording in ChatGPT reads "This might also interest you"; I could not verify it from a primary source, so I have left it out of the table above.
  • Ignoring the user experience. Free users who see more ads may move to paid tiers or other assistants. That could shift who sees your organic mentions.

A one-week test plan

  1. Day 1: Pick 10 pages where a table or calculator would answer the query.
  2. Day 2: Add or tidy tables, units and dates; keep your sources visible.
  3. Day 3: Ask ChatGPT the target questions in Free and Plus if you can, and record the format of each answer.
  4. Day 4: Check whether your brand is cited or visualised; screenshot with date.
  5. Day 5: Review referral traffic from ChatGPT in analytics.
  6. Day 6: For paid teams, write the hypothesis for any visual-ad test.
  7. Day 7: Decide what to keep, and schedule a re-check in four weeks.
